18世紀の前半と後半それぞれ10冊ずつ、計20冊におけるdareの用法を調査し、18世紀英語においては、歴史的に古い助動詞用法が、平叙文では圧倒的に多く、とりわけ否定平叙文では支配的であること、また疑問文でも助動詞用法が圧倒的に優勢であることを明らかにした。また、命令文ではdareが用いられること自体が珍しく、助動詞用法、本動詞用法、混交用法がそれぞれ1例ずつ見られることを示した。18世紀を前半と後半で分けて見てみると、前半に比べ後半には助動詞用法の割合が減り、その分、混交用法の割合が増加しており、現代英語の用法を予知させる変化の兆しが見てとれる。形態的には、過去形は、18世紀前半にはdurstが一般的であるが、後半にはdaredが主流となること、dareを過去形として用いた例は1例のみであること、また過去分詞形はdaredのみであることを指摘した。

This study describes the usage of the marginal modal auxiliary dare in 18th-century English, based on 20 texts (novels, dramas, essays and letters): 10 from the first half of the century and 10 from the latter half. The results obtained show that in the 18th century as a whole dare as an auxiliary verb followed by the plain infinitive is predominant in declarative sentences, especially in negative sentences. In interrogative sentences, it also prevails over dare as a main verb followed by the to-infinitive. Dare rarely occurs in imperative sentences and only three instances are met with in my data, which appear once in the auxiliary construction, the main verb construction, and the mixed one of these two, respectively. In the latter half of the 18th century the auxiliary construction decreases slightly, whereas the mixed construction increases considerably. As for its preterit forms, the form durst is the rule in the first half of the century, while dared becomes more common in the latter half. Only one instance of dare as the preterit form is found. The past participle form is always dared.
