Abstract

The aim of this investigation is to develop an ecological micro hydro turbine which set in small stream, e.g. creeks and channels. Savonius type hydro turbine proposed in this study can be easily put in and out the water without almost civil works. A model of a two-bucket Savonius rotor (the rotor with a simple blade) was constructed and tested in a water tunnel. The power performance characteristics of the turbine and the flow field in and around the rotor were examined visually and also quantitatively with the use of PTV method. It was clarified that the turbine's performance is changed with the distance between a rotor and bottom of channels, with the rotational direction of the rotor. In the present work, another type of a Savonius rotor which has 90-degree phase shift (the rotor with staggered blades) is constructed and the power performance is measured. This paper reports the difference of the performance between the rotor with simple blade and that with staggered blades.
