Abstract
In a system of a rotating disc in a cylindrical enclosure, the effects of the radial gap between the disc rim and the shroud of the enclosure and the axial gap between the disc wall and the end wall of the enclosure are evaluated by numerical and experimental methods. A quantitative measure is used to determine the critical Reynolds number at the onset of asymmetric flows. Distinctive features of the presence of the radial and axial gaps bring characteristic changes in the transition of flow patterns. Numerical and experimental results of the power spectra show their favorable agreements.
