In this study, we analyzed knee kinematics during stair climbing for cruciate-retaining (CR) and posterior-stabilized (PS) total knee arthroplasties (TKAs). Thirteen knees with CR and four knees with PS TKAs were evaluated using image matching method. All patients were able to walk without support. Internal femoral rotation along with the extension was observed during stair climbing activity for both CR and PS TKAs. In the PS TKA, anterior maximum approach point translation was observed from 80% to 90% of stair climbing. Our method evaluating in vivo knee kinematics was reproducible. The results indicated that motion analysis of knee prosthesis could clarify typical motion patterns.
