A biomimetic synthesis of polyoxygenated polycyclic aromatic compounds via polyketides was examined. Several polyoxoalkanedioates were generated from dicarboxylic acid derivatives and methyl acetoacetate dianion. And the intra-molecular condensation of the polyketoesters gave various phenolic compounds. The Ca(OAc)_2 was found to be one of the best catalysts. The treatment of aromatic glutarates with the dianion followed by Ca(OAc)_2 afforded polyhydroxy derivatives of anthracene and naphthacene related to the natural products. The arenes were oxidized to the corresponding quinones with oxygen under basic conditions. The quinones also are aromatic glutarates, and were subjected to the further extention of the ring system.
