CT findings of 103 patients, with 108 non-cancerous, transient focal lung lesions, detected in a population-based CT screening for lung cancer, were reviewed. The 108 lesions included: Type 1, ground glass opacity nodule (n=54), Type 2, solid density nodule (n=27), and Type 3, irregularly shaped, heterogeneous density nodule (n=27). Most lesions were smaller than 20 mm. Fifty-six percent of type 1 and 70% of type 2 were located in the lower lobe, and 52% of Type 3 were in the right upper lobe. Eighty-five percent (92/108) showed a resorbing tendency, decreasing in size or density, at the first diagnostic CT exam performed within 3 months following CT screening, while the remaining 15%(16/108) showed evidence of improvement of the nodule within the following 15 months. Eighty-eight percent (14/16) of these showed acinar or lobular pattern, with a rectilinear or concave contour on thin-section CT scans. Type 2 and Type 3 showed a slower resolution than Type 1.
