近年、情報化の進展が著しく、IT基本法の成立やe-JAPAN戦略の決定など政府全体での取組が進んでいる。これ呼応して、教育政策も様々な取組が行われている。特に、初等中等教育においては、ミレニアムプロジェクト「教育の情報化」に基づき、コンピュータの整備やインターネット接続などの取組が急ピッチで行われている。高等教育においても、大学審議会で示された方向に基づき、国が法的整備、予算措置を行うとともに、各大学等においてはそれぞれの努力により情報化に対応した教育・研究が行われている。しかし、いずれの分野においても、コンテンツの充実、教員の指導力の向上、サポート体制の整備など、ソフト面の充実が課題となっている。

Recent years seen remarkable technological innovation in the field of IT. The Government introduced the IT Fundamental Law and established e-Japan Strategy. Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology is planning a series of measures to promote the IT revolution in education. In the elementary and secondary education area, the Ministry is implementing the installation of computers at schools and so on, based on the Millennium Project. In the higher education area, in response to the reports of the University Council, the Ministry has revised the Standards for the Establishment of Universities, and made necessary appropriations. The problems to be solved in both areas include the development and dissemination of educational contents, improving the quality of teachers, providing a support system and so on.
