「ワザワザ」と「セッカク」の語用効果 : ポライトネス理論からの一考察

Abstract

This paper aims at demonstrating various pragmatic effects in the use of wazawaza and sekkaku in terms of politeness. It also examines whether the effects are considered positive or negative politeness strategies in the universal theory of Politeness proposed by Brown & Levinson (1978). The pragmatic effects can be the speaker's gratitude, comforts, hope, demand for one's gratitude, forcefulness, dissatisfaction, grudge, anger and so on. The pragmatic interpretation can be specified only in context. This paper shows a quite interesting result: both wazawaza and sekkaku can pragmatically function as both negative and positive politeness strategies although use of these words could easily be used to threaten one's negative face as in 'wazawaza/sekkaku watashi ga ichinichi kakete tsukutta no dakara, zenbu tabete ne' (Since I cooked all the dishes taking all day long for you, I'm sure you would eat them all).
