This experiment was conducted in order to examine if being average has positive connotation for Japanese. Japanese adults evaluated validity and reliability of a developing psychology test that measures social sensitivity or cognitive structuring ability, after receiving bogus feedback about their performance on the tests (high, average, or low). They also evaluated to what extent they were convinced about their results. The participants were satisfied with being average as well as when they were high performer, which would reflect Japanese value placed on being average. As for validity and reliability of the tests, the results were complicated. As for the social sensitivity test, those who received high feedback and average feedback evaluated the test more valid than those who were evaluated as low. As for the cognitive structuring test, those who received average feedback evaluated the test most valid. This pattern implies they believe that they are above average on social sensitivity but about average on cognitive structuring. We can say that Japanese self-concept is not necessarily negative, but positive about some abilities.
