- OS2-6 Infrasound Measurement for SUBARU80/2.0 Downwind Turbine

Almost all of the world wind turbine market is shared by upwind turbines, which have rotors upwind of towers. Infrasound, generated by aerodynamic interaction between the blades and the tower has been considered as fatal disadvantage for downwind turbines. FHI developed SUBARU80/2.0, 2MW downwind turbine, which is the largest commercial downwind turbine in the history, aiming for significantly better performance in complex terrain. Infrasound measurement was conducted for the turbine as well as broad band noise. The infrasound measured at 102m downwind of the turbine was 82dGB, significantly less than 92dBG, the guidelines of the Ministry of the Environment. The turbine was shown to be competitive from both of noise and infrasound points of view, as compared with conventional upwind turbines in the market.
