The purpose of the present paper is to report on an attempt to develop a scale measuring the adaptability of senior high school students to extra-curricular activities which they join. It was expected that the result would help improve instructions in school settings. A questionnaire was prepared to measure three areas of adaptability; the sense of being adapted (31 items), the supervisor's method of instruction (35 items), and the views towards music (27 items). The questionnaire was sent to a total of 288 students, including 46 male and 242 female of the first year and second year students in Akita prefecture. All the students were members of the brass band club or the chorus club. Factor analysis was administered on the responses to each of the three sets of questionnaire items. For the first group of items (adaptability), five factors were extracted, including 'a desire for improvement,' 'a sense of being at home in the circle,' 'relationship to the supervisor,' 'relation ship with other members,' and 'escape from the circle.' Three factors were extracted for the second group of items (the supervisor' s method of instruction), and the factors included 'appro achableness, , discipline,' and 'teaching skills and enthusiasm.' The last group of items (views toward music) was found to consist of three factors, including 'usefulness of music,' 'music as a competition,' and 'the value of music.' The results of the analysis based on these factors revealed the following tendencies among students' attitudes towards extracurricular activities: 1) those students who had had learned music some way or other prior to joining the circle at school tended to be more adaptable to extracurricular activities at school than those who had had no such experiences previously; and 2) as there is a strong relationship between various teacher factors, such as approachableness, enthusiasm, and discipline, a balance needs to be struck between these factors to help students spend time effectively in various extracurricular activities.
