From the late 18th century to the 1820s, the Cherokee Indians experienced a profound cultural transformation following the introduction of white culture. Although many studies have already been carried out on this so-called "civilization" of the Cherokees, most have focused on the changes undergone by Cherokee men. However, in order to evaluate the cultural transformation of Cherokee society as a whole, it is necessary to also consider the changes that occurred for Cherokee women. In this paper, I examine the laws enacted by the Cherokee government in the early 19th century to show the changes in the status and roles of Cherokee women through the years of cultural transformation. The laws tell us that the "civilization" of Cherokee women did not just mean their blind adoption of white culture, but the conscious acceptance of the beneficial aspects of the new ways while preserving Cherokee traditions.
