To clarify behavior of carbon in a forest canopy, vertical profiles of concentration and carbon isotopic ratios of CO_2 in canopy air and CO_2 effluxes from a forest floor were measured in a larch forest by using closed chamber method. Soil temperature was the most influential factor in seasonal variation in CO_2 effluxes from the forest floor. By using information on carbon isotope composition, the contributions of soil respiration sources to CO_2 effluxes were evaluated. Root respiration was promoted in the period of vegetation growth, and decomposition of soil organic matter was enhanced when soil temperature was high. It was confirmed that not only soil temperature but also air temperature in the forest influenced litter decomposition. CO_2 concentrations in the canopy were generally low during daytime and high at night, while δ^<13> C shows an opposite trend in the present study. This depletion of CO_2 concentration would be caused by photosynthesis of larch. Moreover, this low δ^<13> C values are influenced by soil respired CO_2. It is considered that CO_2 transport in the canopy can be estimated by using these characters and variations of these.
