Objective: To determine mothers' actual coping behaviors for childcare at one month after childbirth and to elucidate relationships among coping behaviors, childcare-related anxiety, and social support. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on a total of 129 mothers who had visited a general hospital in the Prefecture A for one-month postpartum medical checkups, and analysis was performed for 128 responses (valid response rate, 99.2%). Survey contents included basic characteristics, active and passive coping behavior scales, childcare-related anxiety screening scale, support satisfaction using the Visual Analogue Scale, and the number of conversation partners. Results: A total of 68.8% of mothers' coping behaviors at one month after childbirth were classified as effective coping behaviors, while 31.2% were classified as vicious cycle coping behaviors. Path analysis revealed a mutual relationship between childcare-related anxiety and vicious cycle coping behaviors in which a high level of vicious cycle coping behaviors led to higher childcare-related anxiety and vice versa. In addition, coping behaviors were influenced by the number of conversation partners as well as satisfaction with practical support from biological mothers.
