Male flowers of four wild gourd species, Trichosanthes laceribracteata, T. miyagii, T. multiloba and T. ovigera (Cucurbitaceae), were newly recorded as larval hosts of a flower-feeding true fruit fly, Bactrocera scutellata, from southwestern Japan. Combining the results with the previous records revealed that B. scutellata utilizes male flowers of all Trichosanthes species naturally occurring within the distribution range of the fruit fly in Japan. One case of infestation on T. laceribracteata was observed on Kume Island, Okinawa, where B. scutellata was first recorded. This result, together with previous and recent distribution surveys using male attractant of B. scutellata, suggests that the species invaded and colonized Kume Is. after 1970. Bactrocera scutellata was also obtained from the fruits of the cucumber Cucumis sativus at two localities in Okinawa Island, which may become the fifth and sixth examples of infestation of the fruit fly on cucumbers in the field. Although infestation of this flower-feeding fly on cucumber fruits seems to be occasional, occurrence of B. scutellata should be cautiously monitored.
