Abstract
Among the contributors to Kaifuso, Emperor Monmu was the only emperor to compose Chinese poetry for the anthology. Emperor Monmu succeeded to the throne at a young age. Because he did not want to be considered unqualified, he studied classical Chinese. Thus, he acquired a knowledge of classical Chinese as a young man. Confucian learning accounted for his belief that as emperor he should have a recollection of poetry. A characteristic of his poetry is the tendency to feature the theme of an object. He used Japanese Chinese words similar to those found in Manyoshu. This shows his versatility and his ability to use Japanese to compose original Chinese poetry for a global community.
