To examine the effects of multiple radial flame jets on combustion enhancement characteristics, two types of divided chamber combustors are used; a constant-volume and a quasi-constant-volume divided chamber combustor. A hemi-sphere sub-chamber is equipped on the top side of a cylindrical combustor, whereas a piston-cylinder system is installed on the bottom side. 40 small nozzles are regularly arranged on the sub-chamber, from which multiple radial flame jets issue into the main chamber. Stoichiometric mixture of either propane-air or DME-air is used. In the constant volume experiments, measurements of pressure history and high-speed direct observations of the burning process in the main chamber are made by varying the nozzle diameter and the sub-chamber volume as two main parameters. In the quasi-constant volume combustion, the piston displacement is also measured simultaneously with the pressure history. The enhancement behavior of multiple radial flame jets is estimated, based on a simple thermodynamic analysis of a series of pressure histories.
