Investigation was undertaken on the relationship between bacteria in the vagina of mothers and those in the intestines of the new-born babies, using as indexes Doderlein's bacilli and enterococci detected in the vagina which had been made streptomycinresistant. It was found that, so long as the delivery was not completed in an extraordinarily short period of time after the rupture of the bag of waters, the majority of enterococci found in the vagina migrated into the intestines of babies through delivery. It was also observed that Doderlein's bacilli showed less tendency to migrate than enterococci.
