Collective Measurements in Pure Car Carriers at Sea : Analyses of Measurement Results and Strength of the Propeller Blade

Abstract

The authors had a chance to measure the ship oscillation, the hull vibration, various stresses of the propeller shaft and the fluctuation of the hydraulic pressure induced by the propeller of the car carrier in service condition. In this paper, we partly report the results of the data observation. And as the example of the application, we discuss the strength of the propeller blade. Using the lifting surface theory, finite element method and this measured data, we demonstrate one of the method to estimate the stress of the propeller blade. Furthermore, using the fatigue and crack propagation data of the propeller material, we make relation to the strength life of the propeller blade having several stress levels estimated by the above mentioned method.
