On Highly Elastic Rubber Coupling

Abstract

To Meet the extremely difficult situation in the shipping and shipbuilding industries of late, research and development work related to equipment and new materials has been promoted with the view of improving efficiency and saving energy. It is a long time since rubber was applied to torque dampling elastic couplings of diesel engines with reduction gear. Now rubber is regarded as a widely accepted material for elastic couplings, but on the other hand, it is considered to be one of the newest materials for use in engine rooms. According to the incidence of damage, rubber ranks relatively high among component parts of power transmission systems. When it is considered important to recover the reliability of this nonmetallic and, in a sense, special material called rubber once again, let us examine the structure and strength of this material, together with concrete examples of damage caused to it in the past.
