Pilgrims tales, the series of folk tales related to certain pilgrims, represent the concept of pilgrims and play a role to attract people to pilgrimage. The author of this paper sets pilgrims tales as a framework for trying to introduce the result of folk tales research into the study on pilgrimage. The paper also searches the possibility to make a dynamic approach on pilgrims tales, compared to the major studies on folk tales in the past that took static approach such as typification and structural analysis. The main topic in the paper is to discuss the meaning of pilgrimage and the changes in the environment based on the transition of pilgrim tales. Taking the example of "the Tale of Shirinashigai" compiled in "Shikoku Henro Kudoku-ki (Shikoku Henro blessing stories)" issued in 1690 in the Edo era, the paper confirms that information about Shikoku Henro is shared by many people through mass media including books and plays, then analyzes the development of pilgrims action followed by the changes in transportation system and the meaning of Shikoku Henro, based on the result of fieldworks.
