Development of mental imagery was examined by asking 30 children (aged 4-6yrs) to draw the trajectories of three beads fixed on a rod which rotates 180 degrees. At that time, in addition to recording children's responses, the experimenter actively involved by pointing out contradictions found in children's thoughts so that children would cause cognitive conflicts. Consequently, it was found that 4-yr-olds relatively easily noticed contradictions but had difficulties in resolving such contradictions and drawing the trajectories of three beads, and that 5- and 6-yr-olds expressed trajectories with gestures which were equivalent with or slightly more advanced than the expressions of the trajectories depicted in their drawings. These results were discussed from the viewpoint of the development of operation and the role of action, perception, consciousness, and analogy in the development of mental imagery.
