Imazamethabenz methyl, an imidazolinone herbicide, is known to inihibit biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids by inhibition of acetolactate synthase that catalyzes the production of valine, leucine and isoleucine. Treatment of imazamethabenz methyl affected flower shape and pigmentation of petunia corolla, but the treatment did not inhibit the seed production. Imazamethabenz methyl reduced anthocyanin content of petunia corollas to 3% of control at a concentration of 30mg/L. Since phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) was related to anthocyanin synthesis, PAL activity was measured in corolla tissue. Imazamethabenz methyl decreased PAL activity to 47% of control. Imazamethabenz methyl increased free amino acid concentration to 243% of control, but did not affect soluble protein concentration and composition. Imazamethabenz methyl altered amino acid profiles in the corollas. Proline, histidine and cysteine levels significantly increased, but glutamic acid, aspartic acid and methionine levels were reduced in the corollas.
