Amyloid deposition was examined histropathologically by Congo red staining in 18 autopsy cases of renal failure treated clinically by hemodialysis for 1 to 51 months. Amyloid deposits were found in 12 cases (67%) in various organs, especially the aorta (9 cases) and kidney (6 cases). All deposits were found to contain amyloid protein AA by a modification of the potassium permanganate method. No significant difference was seen in the average ages of cases with and without amyloid deposits. However, the incidence of amyloid deposition was different in deseases with primary renal failure, and cases with amyloid had received slightly, though not significantly, less hemodialysis (97±106 times) than those without amyloid (345±353 times).
