Abstract

This paper investigates the performance of for the proposed predetermined-rate automatic repeat request (ARQ) for point-to-multipoint communication using hierarchical modulation assuming the applications of the convolutional channel coding and successive interference cancellation (SIC). In the proposed ARQ scheme, the hierarchical modulation (superposition coding) is used for multiplexing initial and retransmission packets in order to achieve the retransmission without changing the transmission bandwidth, transmission power, and data rate. In the hierarchical modulation, initial and retransmission packet signals are superimposed at the same frequency, so the initial and retransmission packet signals interfere each other. In this paper, we use the SIC that removes this interference in order to improve the residual packet error rate (PER). From the computer simulation results, the proposed ARQ with SIC reduces the required SNR value for residual PER of 10^<-2> comparing to the case without SIC and when the number of terminals is large, such as approximately 500, the proposed ARQ with SIC achieves lower required SNR value than that without retransmission or with the fixed number of retransmissions.
