Abstract
In environmental tourism, resources are created by tourists appreciating and enjoying specific combinations of natural and cultural elements. These resources can be understood as landscapes, which form sets of subjectively constructed images of nature. In Japan, one popular type of landscape is satoyama which, after national discussion of the range of its environmental meanings, has become a term used for a whole set of rural environments. This preferred landscape is recognized as a potential resource for environmental tourism in Japan. The case of Miyama, Kyoto Prefecture, exemplifies the role played by this type of landscape in environmental tourism practices. This paper analyses tourism practices in three villages in Miyama where it can be seen that tourism is a catalyst for actualizing local revitalization and that satoyama is a feature of this actualization.
