The theoretical analysis of the behaviour of the transverse section of the ship in the free vibration state has been made. In the usual treatment of the local vibration of the snip, a vibration system is cut-off from the ship structure, and its frequency is calculated by ignoring the influences of the other members connected to it. For example, the vibration and the frequency of the double bottom is computed on the simply supported boundary condition at the transverse bulkheads and the ship sides, and for the case of the deck the calculations are made on the boundary conditions simply supported or perfectly fixed at the transverse bulkheads and the ship sides, or at the strong beams and the girders. But in the real structure of the ship, the influence of the vibration, for exmple, of the double bottom spread over the sides, the deck, the bulkheads, and many other members of the fore and aft holds connected to it. Therefore, the estimation of the natural frequency of the local vibration in the structure must be made by the calculation of the coupled state with the many connected members. In this report the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the vibration of the one frame spaced transvese section of the single decker have been theoretically obtained. From the results of the graphical and numerical calculation, it was known that the lowest eigenvalue of the bottom member in the coupled state of the vibration might be lower than π, the lowest eigenvalue of the simply supported beam at the both ends, shown by Figs. 6, 7. Examples of the vibration mode of the transverse section was qualitatively shown by Figs. 9, 10. In this 1st. report the analysis was made for the case of the single decker, ignoring the effects of many decks, pillars, and the longitudinal members, but the analysis including these effects will be made in the near future.
