Field occurrence of lyctid wood-boring beetles (Coleoptera: Lyctidae) is discussed as related to natural distribution of the species. In an open forest near Osaka, Lyctus brunneus (STEPHENS), a presumably introduced species, was found on oak woods deposited under vinyl sheet, still suggesting difficulty in finding it in the natural condition. In an open timber yard in Hokkaido, L. linearis(GOEZE) was found on oak logs as the first outdoor occurrence record, suggesting its natural distribution there.
