Brassinosteroids are steroid hormones of plants that regulate plant growth and development. Biosynthesis pathway of brassinosteroids is divided into two stages, stage of sterol biosynthesis and that of brassinosteroids biosynthesis. The physiological functions of brassinosteroids in the angiosperm Arabidopsis thaliana have been well studied, whereas those in the moss have not. In this study, we found the Arabidpsis DWF7 homolog in P. patens (PpDWF7) and constructed PpDWF7 disruptants by homologous recombination. Phenotypes of the disruptants were similar to wild type grown on media containing brassinosteroid biosynthesis inhibitors, such as brassinazole or spironolactone; the size of colony and the number of gametophores were decreased, and the size and the number of gametophore leaf cells were reduced. These results suggest that PpDWF7 may be a brassinosteroid deficient mutant. We are now testing whether phenotypes can be recovered by adding campesterol on growth media.
