Abstract

In this paper, I have tried to argue that the study of Business Ethics will provide a common ground for dialogue, where both the United States and Japan can develop a productive discussion without falling into cultural relativism or political power play. Considering the major factors contributing to Business Ethics' popularity in the US, I can conclude that Japan has to face the same factors of business environmental change. This will require the total re-engineering of managerial philosophy and ethics. By applying a normative standard to evaluate culture-bound managerial style, we can distill acceptable from unacceptable conduct. If we can successfully filter out mutually acceptable business customs, we might be able to obtain a set of universal business norms which can only be reached through sincere normative dialogue. That is what Business Ethics is all about.
