Abstract

Oceanographic observation and plankton sampling were conducted in Iwanai Bay, western Hokkaido, on March 1-2 and March 28-29, 1988. During this period, phytoplankton cell densities increased by two to three times, suggesting that the spring phytoplankton bloom was in progress. At the end of March, less saline water was observed at the surface of the some neritic stations. This resulted from outflow of fresh water. At these stations, nanophytoplankton cell density was high at 10m depth, while ciliates density was high at 5m depth, which was just below halocline. It is considered that although nanophytoplankton would grow at 5 and 10m depths from the beginning to end of March, ciliates grown at 5m depth grazed nanophytoplankton at the depth, then the cell density maximum layer of nanophytoplankton developed at 10m depth.
