Abstract

This paper explores the user's ease of learning in the operation of batch type machine. The experiments were based upon the operation of a video tape deck (VTD), a typical batch type instrument, in order to investigate the causal relationships between problems in operation and the effects of learning. From the results of these experiments a total of 21 learning difficulties were found. These can be represented hierarchically. Of the 21 problems, sixteen were problems of initial understanding and five represented longer term learning problems. Subsequently, it was found that learnable factors generally consisted of "control" factors, and difficult to learn factors consisted "Sequence of operation" factors. The two factors subordinate to "Sequence of operation" were Feedback-provide response after controls-" and "Automatic controls-classify the automatic controls as necessary or not-". It is considered that these are surmountable factors.
