Abstract

The formation of residual current over the Head of Ariake Sea is discussed with the field observation and numerical models. The residual current and density distribution were observed on July 15, 2005 (vertically stratified, neap tide) and November 1, 2005 (vertically homogeneous, spring tide). Applying a diagnostic model based on the MEC Ocean Model to the observed density distribution, the density current distribution was obtained. On the other hand, tidal residual current was obtained with a tide model based on the MEC Model. The residual current field was calculated by superposition of them and was compared with the observed residual current to check the accuracy of the models. The result implies that the density current may be underestimated. In the vertically stratified, neap tide condition, the contribution of tidal residual current and density current to the residual current are comparable. In the vertically homogeneous, spring tide condition, the contribution of tidal residual current is dominant. However, in the latter condition, the contribution of density current is not negligible.
