The possibility of reactive oxygen species (ROS) relating to bone resorption process has been examined, and speculation included that generation of excessive ROS through exercise might become oxidative stress and had a negative impact on bone turnover. Lycopene has been recent focus as an antioxidative substance. It would be quite effective because of its capability to remove excessive ROS resulted in exercise, and exert the positive effect on bone turnover with exercise. In this experiment, the growing rats were randomized into 4 groups: the group of Control (C), the group of control plus exercise with treadmill running at 25m/min・60min/day for 9 weeks (CE), the group treated with Lycopene [50ppm (0.005%)] included in typical feeding for 10 weeks (L), and the group with lycopene and running (LE). We measured the level of d-ROMs (reactive oxygen metabolites) as a marker for oxidative stress, and the levels of BAP (biological antioxidant potential) as a marker for antioxidant ability. As the result, Detection of lycopene was seen in the group L and LE for serum, liver, heart, and gastrocnemius muscle respectively. The d-ROMs value and deoxypyridinoline (Dpd) as bone resorption marker were decreased in both L and LE groups significantly. And the group L had bone mineral content (BMC) increase due to treadmill running only. The group LE also showed significant increase of BAP value. Thus, Lycopene intake with running exercise concluded to suggest remarkable facilitation for BMC quantity according to extrusion of excessive ROS by exercise.
