Biomass production by short-rotation willow coppices is affected by several factors; i.e., (1) intrinsic growth potential of willow clones, (2) climate conditions during growth seasons, (3) growth inhibition by diseases and insect damage, (4) soil conditions including fertility, groundwater level and residual agrochemicals (herbicides), and so on. Previously, we selected 4 willow clones as good performers for biomass production in a cool climate region (Tohoku district). In the present study, we examined the effects of temperature and drought on their growth by cultivating them in a warmer climate region (Kinki district), and revealed that respective willow clones differently responded to high annual temperature and drought, showing different growth and biomass production.
