Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present the tephrostratigraphic framework of middle Pleistocene in the Chubu-Kanto area. Middle Pleistocene tephrostratigraphic frameworks on the flanks of several voIcanoes in North Shinshu to North Kanto are revised. Two widespread tephra layers presumably from south Kyushu, are newly identified. These tephra layers, Kt-U (Nuka 1) and Th (SnA and Beige), provide significant datum planes of 300ka and 250ka,respectively. The other widespread tephra layers, called the Omachi APm Tephra Beds (APms;300-350ka), derived from Momisawadake VoIcano in the Northern Japanese Alps, are found and described in detail at many localities. The several APm layers provide an important datum plain for tephrostratigraphy from Chubu to North Kanto. Moreover, several widespread tephra layers, derived from voIcanoes in Chubu, are newly described.
