Australia has abundant solar resources and well-established, growing centres for research in concentrated solar thermal power (CSTP). However, commercial deployment of CSTP in Australia is still in its infancy. To address this shortfall, several government incentive schemes have recently been established to help to promote the commercialisation and deployment of CSTP technology. Funding has also been provided to further the research and development of technologies suited to specific Australian needs, such as generation of electricity with low water use in arid areas, calorific upgrading of fossil fuels using solar energy, solar steam boosting for coal-fired power station boilers, and thermal energy storage technologies. This paper will give an overview of current government schemes supporting CSTP in Australia, research activities being undertaken, and commercial facilities planned or underway. A map and table summarising CSTP projects are included.
