Abstract
Plastics coated with metal have been widely used in our daily life. The main reason is that they have both the property of plastics and metals. The metal coatings on the plastics are mainly formed by nonelectrolytic plating technique. But, there are two problems on the surfaces of plastics against the plating process. One is hydrophobic property of plastic and surface roughness. To achieve the good surface condition, a lot of hazardous chemicals are needed. So, we have carried out the investigation in order to solve these problems by surface modification technology using Vacuum-Ultraviolet irradiation. We concentrated on acrylic resin and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin. Hydrophilic property of acrylic resin and ABS resin has been developed by Vacuum-Ultraviolet irradiation. Besides, it was found that the surface roughness became larger by Vacuum-Ultraviolet irradiation in the case of acrylic resin, but very small effect in the case of ABS resin. As a result, we found that plating process in which hazardous chemicals such as chromic anhydride are not needed. It can be said that we have successfully developed a new basic technology that solves the problems on the plating for plastics using Vacuum-Ultraviolet irradiation.
