Abstract A new teaching guideline for elementary schools came into effect in April, 2011. Each school has been working to institute this in the manner that will be most effective for their educational system. Teachers and local governments involved with the subjects of Drawing & Handicrafts and Fine Arts had started the preparation as soon as the guidelines were announced. The guidelines advocate connecting the art curricula of elementary and junior high school across grade levels, with each level being appropriate to the students' developmental stage. In this serial study I have explored how to design the curricula and how materials should be selected. I hope to show how arts educators can create curricula of Drawing & Handicrafts and Fine Arts that will make elementary school art education and junior high school art education more consistent with each other. In elementary and junior high schools it is most important to let students develop their artistic ability, based on their natural desire to express themselves and on the inspiration they receive from the shapes and colors of the materials. With this in mind, in this paper, I analyzed and modified two types of real teaching plans originally used for virtual classes, one for the ninth grade and the other for the third grade. This analysis and restructuring suggest that, across grade levels, adopting Zoukeiasobi(Enjoyable art projects)stimulates children's interest in art. Further examination of curriculum-design and material selection in art-related subjects at elementary and junior high schools in various circumstances is necessary.
