Abstract

Through the examinations of diagenetic alteration of the Paleogene sedimentary rocks in Amakusa, western Kyushu, using coals, organic particles dispersed in rocks, clays and other minerals, we can point out here the following two features of the present area; namely the one is that the sediments are highly alterated under diagenesis and/or metamorphism compared with those in other coal fields in Kyushu, and the other is that the rank changes locally from the highest in the north region to the lowest in the central one. We regard that the former feature reflects a great amount of accumulation of sediments caused by tectonic subsidence of the basin floor, and the latter a tilting of the area toward the north after tectonic movement and a thermal influence related to igneous intrusions.
