Twelve sterols were isolated from the fruiting bodies of the mushroom Russula sanguinea (Russulaceae) and their structures were identified as (22E)-ergosta-7,22-dien-3β-ol (1), ergost-7-en-3β-ol (2), ergosterol (3), ergosta-5,7-dien-3β-ol (4), (22E)-ergosta-5,7,9(11),22-tetraen-3β-ol (5), ergosterol peroxide (6), (22E)-ergosta-7,22-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol (7), ergost-7-ene-3β,5α,6β-triol (8), 24-methylenecholest-7-ene-3β,5α,6β-triol (9), (22E)-ergosta-7,22-diene-3β,5α,6α,9α-tetrol (10), (22E)-ergosta-7,22-diene-3β,5α,6β,9α-tetrol (11), and ergost-7-ene-3β,5α,6β,9α-tetrol (12). This is the first time that compounds 4,5,8,9,10,11 and 12 have been isolated from the genus Russula mushrooms.
