A Practical Subject for Freshmen in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Ichinoseki National College of Technology

抄録

This paper describes a practical subject called "Mechanical Design and Practice IB". The subject has been offered since 2009 to freshmen of our department of mechanical engineering, at Ichinoseki National College of Technology (INCT). This practical subject is aimed at teaching basic techniques of mechanical engineering (e.g. measuring, calculating and practical use of tools). The program consists of the following sessions, (a) measuring techniques using a vernier caliper and micrometer and the use of a pocket calculator, (b) how to use tools through the disassembly and assembly of a machine and (c) the designing and making of a paper airplane. These practices focus on the development of the basic knowledge of mechanical engineering and basic techniques for solving problems through the students' own "trial and error". The results of a questionnaire, that was given at the end of the school year, concerning this subject, are also shown in this paper. The students who take this subject will cultivate a wide interest in the fundamental techniques of mechanical engineering.
