Environmental and energy issues are causing major concerns as a result of the prospects of global warming. This report presents the authors' entries in the first event of the 'New Energy Contest' organized by Tamagawa University. The challenge in the contest was building a non-electric refrigerator. Students from universities and national colleges of technology were locked in a battle for various ideas to build a refrigerator. The authors designed and built two types of refrigerators: a refrigerator that uses a regenerative material and another that uses the combined effect of boiling at a reduced-pressure and an adsorptive material. Here we report on the design and fabrication aspects of the refrigerators and the measured final temperatures of the two refrigerators.
