A fuel injector is one of the key devices of gas turbine combustors as it controls air/fuel mixing at early stages of combustion process and therefore directly affects emission performance. In aero engine applications, airblast fuel injectors are widely used due to several advantages such as good air/fuel mixing and large turndown ratio. This paper focuses on experimental characterization of sprays from such injectors. In a series of study, the main interest is to understand the effects of the design parameters and the operating conditions. Some of recent unique activities on spray characterizations at Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency are also presented, such as elevated ambient pressure spray tests and applications of a novel spray measurement technique to combusting sprays.
