Cholesteric liquid crystals are used to show temperature profile, since their colors are changed according to temperature. The temperature measurement with the liquid crystal doesn't provide only point but also surface information on heat transfer. The objective of this paper is to apply a transient technique to the measurement systems of heat transfer coefficient using thermochromic liquid crystals. This method is focused on intensity peak of the liquid crystal exhibiting a change in color with narrow temperature range to get local heat transfer coefficients. The experimental results which applied to a jet impinging at different oblique angles to a plane surface are described. The practical applicability of this method and a few remaining issues which should be improved are discussed.
