Abstract

This paper deals with studying and teaching will in if-clauses through movies. Clear situations of film sequences provide teachers and students with an alternative approach to this semantic subject. Numerous examples of the Past Tense in film scripts refer to and place emphasis on the present feelings or thoughts of the speaker or hearer. On the other hand, many examples of the Future Tense found in movies put stress on the present. These expressions suggest the speaker's 'distancing' from the immediate reality. Although "polite will" in if-clauses is generally considered as representing the volition of the subject word, it should be categorized as the speaker's 'distancing' We should use movies to understand the abovementioned grammatical point.
