The utilization of tuna resources has become a global concern in recent years because of the remarkable decrease in the number of tuna, such as the Atlantic bluefin tuna. Although the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), which is responsible for tuna resource jurisdiction, has reduced the permissible limit for the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) of the Atlantic bluefin tuna since 2006, a proposal to ban its international trade was discussed at the 15th meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) held at Doha in Qatar in 2010. At present, the exhaustion of the resource has been noticed because of intensive fishing by purse seiners caused by the rapidly increasing demand for its farming business. This study aimed to analyze the historical development of tuna farming and its future prospects. The international situation including the discussion at CITES and the management trends by ICCAT has also been summarized. In addition, the present status of the business has been revealed through estimation of its cost price and profit level. In conclusion, the study indicates that the farming industry has already passed its growth stage and reached its maturity or turning point. Because of severe global competition, each farming company will have to further innovate and analyze their comparative advantage in their production and marketing.
