  • Circumstances around the Concept of "Construction" in Mathematics Education : Construction of Number World as an Example

抄録

According to the theory of constructivism (especially of radical constructivism), for the genuine mathematics learning it is said to be needed that the new knowledge should be constructed by children themselves. However, it is not clearly explained from what and how this construction can be done. In this paper it is argued that the new knowledge is constructed not only by appling the individual knowledge proper to the present knowledge-world but, after having enough mastery over there, by using expansively and more or less explicitly the structuring principles which have implicitly ruled the present world. The new concept is said to be truely constructed only if the construction is carried out under the structure of the new world as its background. It is also pointed out that in the mathematical construction there are working two psychological powers that are analogous to affectivity and psyche of Caleb Gattegno's respectively: one is the power of exploring and the other is the power of application. The former is the energy to cultivate the new world of knowledge and the latter is that of applying the knowleges and techniques which are already in one's hand. The construction will be said to be actually realized under the co-operation of these two powers. In this thesis the auther sympathizes with the theory of interactionism of Heinlich Bauersfeld, who insists that concepts and other knowledges are properties of the subjective global state and for its change it needs the negociation among children and their active participations in the classroom-culture. The claim of this paper, the auther believes, will give a reasonable foundation to the recently prevailing mode of classrooms where the teacher encourages children to negociate among them or discuss actively with each other. Though such a way of the classroom may seem not to be an efficient way of teaching only to spend much time, it would certainly stimulate each children's active construction of knowledges and ultimately produce a good effect of learning.
