Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) is a biodegradable ceramic material which is known to show better osteoconductivity. The present study was designed to investigate the extent to which OCP displays cytotoxic and inflammatory responses based on its dissolution in vitro by comparing with other calcium phosphate ceramics. Cell proliferation on the sample coated plates, estimation of calcium and phosphate concentration, and degree of supersaturation in the medium supernatant, and cytotoxicity test and inflammatory response test were performed. The results obtained indicate that OCP is a biocompatible material as well as hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate which are already used clinically.
