In the field of apheresis technology, donor apheresis has been performed to collect platelet concentrate product and fresh frozen plasma for blood transfusion, and source plasma for plasma derivatives in the Red Cross Blood Centers. In order to achieve self-sufficiency for plasma derivatives in Japan, donor apheresis and donation of 400 mL whole blood were introduced in 1986 to increase the volume of source plasma. Currently, 29% of donors in Japan are apheresis donors. Mainly three kinds of apheresis equipment have been used in the Blood Centers. For the three donor apheresis devices, the centrifugal technology is used to collect platelets and plasma. The principle and characteristics of the centrifugal technology applied in the donor apheresis are mentioned and discussed. In the platelet transfusion practice, a platelet concentrate product deriving plateletpheresis from a single donor is preferable to minimize and to prevent adverse transfusion reactions. With the limited number of donors, it is essential that donor apheresis for blood component collection should be more effectively performed and managed by each regional blood center. The adverse reactions to donor apheresis are also briefly described.
